ADAARAN RESORTS PLANS NOVEL INIATIVE TO CELEBRATE WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2012

Friday, June 1st, 2012

Passionate about protecting the environment Adaaran Resorts Maldives have planned a series of
activities to celebrate World Environmental Day which falls on the 5th June 2012. In keeping with
Adaaran Resorts’ strict environmental policies designed to lower its carbon footprint and conserve
precious resources this year activities include the planting of indigenous trees, cleaning of house reefs
to reduce damage by pollutants to coral reef ecosystems, island clean up and the planting of Casava
plants. The latter is a novel approach by Adaaran Resorts to introduce locals to the benefits of Tapioca
derived from the Casava plant, a proven cure for cancer owing to its high content of the Vitamin B17.
World Environment Day 2012 will see hundreds of Casava trees planted in land marked for agricultural
purposes across the Adaaran resort chain. Come harvest time, as part of Adaaran’ s Corporate Social
Responsibility (CSR) campaign the Tapioca will be distributed to local islands in close proximity to
Adaaran Resorts in North Male Atoll, South Male Atoll and Raa Atoll of the Maldives archipelago.

Chief Operating Officer-Adaaran Resorts, Mr.Upul Peiris says his aim is to assist Maldivians to prevent
cancer in this society. In a country with one of the smallest populations in the world it is important that we
do what we can to ensure the longevity of the people as well as the environment and what better time
than World Environment Day.”

Adaaran Resorts believes the benefits of this initiative will be twofold; the planting of tree’s and Cassava
shrubs will contribute to the prevention global warming by reducing levels of the greenhouse gas carbon
dioxide and the introduction of Tapioca into the diet of staff and local islanders will help in the fight against
cancer.

A firm believer of responsible tourism that incorporates economical, social and environmental
components of development into resort strategies means that Adaaran Resorts is always thinking globally
and acting locally. Over the years, Adaaran Resorts passion for promoting environmental awareness
has seen the implementation of best practices such as 7R (Reuse, Recycle, Reduce, Repair, Reclaim,
Reject and Replace), sourcing of materials locally, installing energy-saving light bulbs, encouraging the
use of bicycles and battery-operated vehicles, no plastic bags are issued to staff and guests, encouraging
guests to take batteries back with them and the use of natural ventilation where ever possible. In addition,
the amount of waste generated is reduced through responsible purchasing, garbage and waste is sorted
for recycling, an efficient composting system has been implemented that recycles food refuse, waste,
paper, cardboard and sawdust and wood shavings from the carpentry workshops which is converted to
compost used to grow organic gardens of fruit, vegetables and herbs which are served at the resorts.

Adaaran Resorts hopes to continue developing its environmental policies, and raising awareness, to
ensure future generations are able to enjoy a sustainable and protected environment in years to come as
well as to support the Maldives in meeting its goal of being the first carbon neutral country by 2020.
