Not a single officer who wants Nasheed back in office- Kuwa Mohodhey

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has alleged that the within days of him being ousted from office in the alleged coup, sections of the military offered to stage a “counter-coup” and reinstate him as the President again.

Nasheed said this while speaking on consolidation of democracy in Maldives at the Observer Research Foundation in the Indian capital New Delhi.

The former President said that after a week since he was “forced to quit”, a section of the military came to him and offered to stage a counter-coup to install him back to power. He said that he told the two generals who came to him not to waste their time.

“A few days after the coup of Feb. 7, I was approached by some Maldivian military officials wanting to carry out a counter-coup and install me as president again. I refused and asked them not to waste my time,” Nasheed said.

He said that he refused the military offers of a couter coup due to his strong democratic roots. He added that brute force is wrong, even if it is him who does it or others.

Reiterating his calls for early elections, Nasheed claimed that “Islamic radicals are now taking control of the Maldives in the absence of an elected government.” He said that if the alleged radicals gains control of the country, “it will not only pose a threat to Maldivians, but also to other nations of the region and to the enormous maritime trade that passes through the shipping lanes close to Maldives.”

Meanwhile, Mohamed Yusuf (Kuwa Mohodhey) said that Nasheed’s allegation of the offer of a counter coup by some military generals is a blatant lie.

He said that there is not a single Police officer nor a single Military officer who would want Nasheed installed back as the head of the government.

  1. Maldivian military asked a mad man to counter coup? Now who brought a coup here? Nasheed should say he wished he would bring a coup after few days he resigned.

  2. What type of strong democratic roots is Nasheed referring to especially after the mob activities he organized for so long in the city? I still cannot forget or forgive the violence at the Majlis by Nasheed’s close contacts who are members of the Majlis. No respect for the Maldivian flag and disrespect for the rules of the land and constitution and acting like a crazy lunatics.

  3. Even though Nasheed himself is a good person, his associates in the Party are mostly crooks .. who was and will always be money grabbing, corrupted scavengers even during Maumoons regime. So for a real democracy to surface in the Maldives … it is very clear that younger less corrupted devoted people for the country can only bring the country to a new era of democracy that will flourish for the good of the country. The Majlis itself has discordant them selves from average Maldivians who really feel that saving the country from all this corruption and inhumane manners is more important than their own pockets.
Lets get rid of the overpaid MPs’, no where in the third world, or matter of fact even in the developed world does MPs’ get such enormous sallaries, and benefits. We have to start in a more realistic manner….
