Male’City Council has temporarily banned the use of loudspeakers in the mosques to give religious lectures.

Councilor, former film actor Hassan Afeef  (Janbu) said that the ban is only on the use of the loudspeakers and that the preachers can still use the speakers within the mosques.

“We are trying to repair the loudspeakers of the mosques. We are even installing more loudspeakers so that the call to prayer is heard to the people clearly without any difficulty. But we have put a temporary ban on the use of these loudspeakers to give religious lectures for very good reasons,” he said.

Hassan Afeef said that only licensed preachers should give religious lectures and sermons in the mosques. He said that the council will give permission to all licensed preachers to give lectures in the mosques.

The City Council has also banned the unauthorized Quran classes held in the mosques. Hassan Afeef said that the council did not ban the unauthorized Quran classes to ban religious lectures or tighten the regulations for the preachers. He said that some people have been giving classes without proper qualification and authorization. He additionally said that some of these people have been reported to have been causing mischief in the mosques troubling other worshippers in the mosques.
