President Visits Maamendhoo and meets Island Council

As part of his tour to Laamu atoll, President Mohamed Nasheed yesterday visited Maamendhoo.

During the visit to Maamendhoo the President met Maamendhoo Island Council and discussed the development of the island as well as the arrangements required to deliver government programmes and services through the Council.

While in Maamendhoo, the President also visited Maamendhoo School. Addressing the students and their parents, President spoke on the government’s education policy. He said the government’s policy was to make all schools single session so as to provide teachers with additional time and space to deliver a more holistic education as well as to allow pupils to benefit from a wider range of academic and non-academic activities. He also said the target was to increase the number of students who pass at least 5 subjects in O’level exam.

The President also highlighted the importance of extra-curricular activities. In this regard, he said the government also p to build a basketball court and a volleyball court in Maamendhoo.
