President meets Human Rights Commission

President Dr Mohamed Waheed Tuesday met with the members of the Human Rights Commission. The meeting was held at the President’s Office.
Speaking at the meeting, the President stressed the necessity to encourage a culture of respect for human rights. He further assured the members that the government will give its full cooperation towards the Commission’s work.
President Waheed noted that additional legislations were needed to expand the scope of work of the Human Rights Commission and other institutions.
In reference to the state of the social sector in the Maldives, the President said that women’s and children’s issues had been neglected, and that the government would try and identify measures to be taken to address those issues.
At the meeting, the President of the Human Rights Commission Mariyam Azra stated the importance of the government’s roadmap for a calm and peaceful Maldives.
Moreover, she noted that strengthening the judiciary of the Maldives was vital to cultivate a culture of human rights. In this regard, she stressed the necessity to uphold the rule of law and respect court rulings. Azra also spoke on the need to strengthen the role of the parole board in restoring peace and harmony in the Maldives.
