Pr. Nasheed cannot travel abroad and return home: Umar

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

PPM Deputy Leader Umar Naseer has warned President Mohamed  Nasheed that the president cannot travel abroad and return home as long as the Chief Judge of the Criminal Court Abdulla Mohamed is under arrest.
The PPM leader was speaking at the all opposition joint protest held at artificial beach last night. Umar repeated his calls to the President  to resign because of his failure to respect the Constitution and obey the orders of the Supreme Court.
Umar repeated the warning indicating that President Nasheed cannot return the country if he travels abroad under the present circumstances. The opposition protest held for the 18th consecutive day to condemn the President for repeatedly violating the Constitution warned the President and the chiefs of the security that there will be dire consequences for their breaking judiciary and  the democratic system in the country. The time is running out for those who have arrested the judge and refused to respect the constitution. All those involved in crippling the judicial system will be severely punished, they repeated the warnings.
Jumhoory Party Leader Gasim Ibrahim also expressed serious concerns and fury about the unconstitutional manner in which the President has handled major state affairs which he said has undermined the judicial and democratic system of the country. If the president is alleging the courts to be illegal, then the President’s election  and swearing in to office is also illegal because the courts were involved in those processes, Gasim said. He repeatedly warned the President to resign and leave office immediately.
Gasim and his Jumhoory Party joined MDP coalition in the second round of the 2008 presidential election and contributed  huge support to elect Nasheed to power. Gasim and his party received some share in the new Government of President Nasheed, while Gasim was appointed Home Minister. But Gasim resigned and coalition broke soon after due to widening differences between the two sides.
Meanwhile President Nasheed has said his committed to reform the judiciary as a major part of the democratic rule ushered in the country. He continues to say he will never betray the people and nation and will do all possible for the good of the nation. He has also challenged the opposition parties that a mere 100 people protesting in the streets cannot topple him. He accuses the judicial system is unable to regulate itself and the judge arrested is politically bias.
However, The Supreme Court, all opposition parties in the country, lawyers independent institutions, the UN and International Commission of Jurists have called to release the Judge immediately.
Opposition leaders have also said Nasheed’s presidency has ceased to be in force since violated the Constitution and disobeyed the Supreme Court order. They say Nasheed does not have any constitutional capacity to remain in office. Opposition parties who have pledged their allegiance to Vice President Mohamed Waheed to take over the presidency have called on  the security forces to do the same soon.
