MDP will find it difficult to join the national unity govt- Yameen

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

Since ex-President has made the allegations against the current government that it is a rebel government it is now difficult for his party Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to join the national unity government, says the Parliamentary group leader of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Abdullah Yameen.
Speaking at the Fasmanzaru programme Mulaku MP Yameen said that MDP is now reluctant to join the national unity government because Nasheed demanded for reinstatement as President and called the current legitimate government as a rebel government after 24 hours of his publicly televised resignation address, at which he stated that he was resigning willingly, for the good of the people.
Yameen said that the former ruling party is now unable to save themselves from the many contradictory statements they have said regarding the validity of Nasheed’s resignation and the legitimacy of President Dr. Mohamed Waheed’s government.
He said that it is not correct to wait in hope for MDP’s participation in the Roadmap meetings when the party is stating openly that they will not join the government. He said that the government has given enough time for MDP to join the talks. However, he said that if MDP wants a second chance it is best they are allowed to participate in the meetings.
