MDP violated all terms of the NUA: Sheikh Imran

Sunday, February 5th, 2012

Opposition Adhaalath Party leader Sheikh Imran Abdullah has said that the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) after coming to power broke three promises for the three parties of the National Union Alliance (NUA), he very alliance which brought the current dictatorial regime into power.

In the Friday night’s rally of the 23 December Coalition held at the Artificial Beach area, AP leader Sheikh Imran said that MDP promised his party that the government will do whatever is in their capabilities to uphold Islam and to protect the Islamic unity of Maldives. However, after coming to power MDP government violated this term and worked to shatter the Islamic unity.

Sheikh Imran said that if AP had known that President Nasheed is not to be trusted the party will not have supported him in the 2008 Presidential Elections.

“This is the main reason Adhaalath Party broke away from the MDP coalition. When the government breached the terms made with our party we found no reason to remain in alliance with them,” he said.

Sheikh Imran said that MDP made the false promises of granting thirty percent of the government positions to Jumhooree Party for spending thirty percent of the total expenses of Presindent Nasheed’s campaign during 2008 elections. He said MDP promised Dhivehi Qaumee Party that President Nasheed will hold a mid-term election.

Sheikh Imran said that the President violated all these terms with political parties in the NUA once he was sworn to office.
