Maldives is the cheapest in contrast to the regional airports: Adhil Saleem

Friday, February 3rd, 2012

Minister of Transport and Communications Mohamed Adhil Saleem has said that the ground handling fees of Ibrahim Nasir International Airport is still lower than the fees taken from airports of neighbouring countries.

Speaking to Miadhu Daily, Adhil Saleem noted that the airport increased the wages of the employees four times from 1994 to 2010 although there were no changes brought to the ground handling fees within the same period. He added that the employees have increased in number and also hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent for the development of the airport.

Adhil said that MACL, the government company which operated the airport decided to increase the fee on November 16 2010 after discussing with the Finance Ministry to cover these costs. He said that the notice of the 50 percent increase in the fee was informed to all airlines 9 months prior.

Meanwhile, while Qatar Airways warned that their airline will re-consider flying to the Maldives if handling fees are increased by 51 percent, the Sri Lankan Airlines also announced that they will cease all direct flights operated by UL from Male to Europe and Japan.
