Leaked audio: President requests Police to control the media

An audio of President Mohamed Nasheed requesting the Police to control the media outlets who are covering the anti-government street protests has surfaced.

In the leaked audio which was aired by VTV, a top official of Maldives Police Service is heart speaking to the President saying that some of the media coverage of the ongoing civic protests have sparked differences within the ranks of the Police officers. He tells the President that it is imperative to bring these media outlets under control.

The Police officer additionally tells the President that some Police officers are harassed on the streets because of the ‘wrong portrayal’ of the Police during the media coverage of the anti-government protests.

In the audio, the President informs the Police Officer to bring all those who harass the Police to custody and to take immediate action against such people. Although the President said that the media should have the freedom to disseminate news to the public, he said that the media should be kept within bounds.
