India will work with the new govt: Ganapathi

Sunday, February 12th, 2012

Mr. Madhusudan Ganapathi, Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and India’s special envoy visited Maldives from yesterday morning to assess the current political situation

In a Press Conference held in the Indian High Commission yesterday afternoon, Mr. Ganapathi said that India has a policy of ‘recognizing states’ and the government therefore will work with the present government holding power in Maldives.

He gave information about his meetings with leaders from various political parties, including current President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik, former President Mohamed Nasheed, opposition leaders, Speaker of Parliament and Chief Justice and that all these meetings were extensive.

He said that that India has conveyed his government’s concern to all concerned stakeholders in Maldives. He has urged all sides to try to find a peaceful and democratic resolution to the conflict within the contours of the constitution. Ganapathi did not answer directly to a question whether President Nasheed had requested India’s intervention prior to his changeover of the government.

On the question of how to move forward he said that the problem is an internal development and should be resolved peacefully and democratically by the people of the Maldives without external interference.

In response to another question by Indian media, pointing out the heavy criticisms against Ibrahim Nasir International Airport (INIA) operator GMR India by newly appointed Home Minister Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed earlier, the Indian envoy said that the Maldivian government has assured that all foreign investments including India would be protected despite the change in government.
