Govt will not be shaken by a mere 100 persons coming to streets: Nasheed
Article Tools
A mere 100 people coming to the streets cannot shake the Government and people, said President Mohamed Nasheed. Nasheed who is facing one of the toughest opposition of his rule following the arrest of Chief Judge of the Criminal Court Abdulla Mohamed more than two weeks ago, was speaking in Laamu Fonadoo where he inaugurated a development project.
A mere 100 people coming out to the streets to disturb the public and traders cannot shake the Government or people, he said. We welcome criticism, opinions on development, but when they leave the ambit of opinions and turn work on round the clock TV channels to create problems and instability, then the voices for development cannot be heard, the President said.
President Nasheed went on to say that his Government is working on many projects worth billions. Political parties are not looking to these; they are not seeing and telling the people about that in a correct manner. When they are carrying sticks and breaking glasses, Government will not respond to their calls.
Against the President’s statements, the opposition parties are relentlessly calling on him to govern the country within the boundary of the Constitution and laws, demanding to respect and obey the judiciary, respect the rights of the people. They are demanding the release of the Chief Judge Abdulla arrested without a court order, and obey the order of the Supreme Court to release the Judge. Prominent lawyers of the country have also strongly called for the immediate and unconditional release of the judge. The UN and International Commission of Jurists have also joined the calls for release of the judge.
The arrest has triggered a wave of anti Government protests, which is continuing every day and calling for the resignation of the President saying he has grossly violated the constitution and disobeyed the Supreme Court, and he no longer has any legality to be in office.
