Anti Government continues for the 18th night

The joint opposition protest calling for the resignation of President Mohamed Nasheed and release of the arrested Senior Judge Abdulla Mohamed continued last night for the 18th day. The protest which started to condemn the arrest has centred more focus on the repeated actions of the Nasheed Government violating the Constitution.
The protest has changed its location to Artificial Beach last night after Police had banned and dispersed the protest near MMA building during the past three nights. Huge crowd joined the protest last night attended by key political leaders of various parties. Jumhoory Party Leader Gasim Ibrahim, Council member Abbas Adil Riza, Adalath Party Leader Sheiklh Imran Abdulla, PPM Deputy Leader Umar Naseer, MP Ilham Ahmed, DRP MP Rozaina Adam, Ali Saleem, Qawmy Party Deputy Leader Imad Solih and Council member Sandhaanu Ahmed Didi, 23 Alliance Spokesman Abdulla Mohamed were among them and most of them addressed the protest.
Adalath Leader Sheikh Imran repeated his calls for the unconditional release of Judge Abdulla and the Government to return to democratic rule. He said there are two conditions to stop the protest, first is President Nasheed to make a public apology for his violations of the Constitution, and secondly, Nasheed to resign.
Jumhoory Party Leader demanded President Nasheed to immediately relinquish his office as he has no constitutional capacity to remain President. He made strong remarks on the President’s actions against the Constitution, and stated if the courts are not legal, then the oath he has taken as the President and other precedings that gave him the opportunity to become the President were illegal.
PPM Deputy Leader Umar Naseer warned the Government that the protests will continue and those who violated the Constitution will be punished.
DRP MP Rozaina reminded MDP that the huge size of the protest and the said that the opposition parties are strong and steady in the carrying out their protest until justice and rule of law return. She said the opposition parties have the maximum of courageous women who will not be deterred by MDP’s threats,
The protest later moved to Lonuziraaraiy area and some other areas of Male’ shouting their angry chants against President Nasheed and his Government. Police used pepper spray near Junction Square to disperse the crowd, but the protest continued in different parts of the city in small groups. Some protesters were arrested including Qawmy Party Council member Ahmed Didi, PPM council member Siddeeg and Jumhoory Party Abbas Adil Riza. Ahmed Didi was taken to hospital after being affected by pepper spray.
