Chief Justice Ahmed Faiz has challenged the decision of President Nasheed to stop paying salaries of lower court judges and non enforcing their verdicts. In a statement issued yesterday the Chief Justice said that the judges who have been appointed about one and half years ago are appointed by the Judicial Service Commission as stipulated in the Constitution. He pointed out their salaries will have to be paid and the verdicts they have made during the discharge of their duties will remain legal.
Several other sources including opposition political parties have criticised the President’s decision to stop paying salaries of the judges and non enforcing their verdicts.
