Tear gas disperse anti Govt Protest

The Anti Government protest held near MMA building for the 4th consecutive day moved forward last night issuing strong warnings to the Government and finally attempted to  break the line of riot police force when tear gas was used to disperse the large crowd. During the movement protesters clashed with the Police and several persons were injured. South Galolhu MP Ahmed Mahloof and many others were arrested. Deputy President of the Civil Alliance of 23 December Abdulla Mohamed was also injured.

The Protest started 4 days ago to condemn the arrest of Chief Judge of Criminal Court Abdulla Mohamed , former Justice Minister and Deputy Leader of Qawmy Party Mohamed Jameel. Many political parties joined the protest and leaders and MPs of parties also participated.

Leaders of Political Parties and MPs spoke in the Protest warning President Nasheed and his Government of the consequences of violating the Constitution and law and arresting judges and politicians against the Constitution. They said the country has plunged so low, the democratic system seriously threatened and the country in chaotic situation because of the lack of respect for the rule of law and violation of the constitution by the President.

They said the people are in suffering, the economy collapsed, the country’s assets sold, national integrity in jeopardy because of the growing dictatorship of the President. They warned that the people now desperate and will not wait any longer to suffer under this Government. They warned time is running out for the MDP Government.

There were echoes of their condemnations cries and anger to the President. Protest leaders said that the Constitutional Government and President is no more after the Government violated and challenged the power of the Judiciary, described the the State as a Military Government ruled under Martial Law.

The crowd in the protest tried to stage their assembly in different ares later including MNBC. But the Police went on dispersing the crowd.
