President says he won’t hold Presidential Elections without the establishment of just judiciary

Judge Abdullah will not be allowed within 100 meters of the court building: Nasheed

Local radio channel DhiFM has aired an audio of President Mohamed Nasheed saying that he will not hold the Presidential Elections at the end of his first term without the establishment of a just and fair judiciary and freedom of expression.

According to DhiFM the leaked audio clip is from a meeting of the President with the military. In the nineteen second audio clip the President states, “I will not hold a Presidential Election without the establishment of freedom of expression and free and fair judiciary. This is something that I have promised the people with.”

In another audio which is said to be from the same meeting, President Nasheed said that the currently detained Chief Judge of the Criminal Court Abdullah Mohamed will not be allowed within 100 meters of the Court building. He said that he will inform the military to now allow Judge Abdullah within the court area.

Another audio aired by DhiFM of the President said that he was informed by the Home Minister that this one judge is trying to destroy the justice system of the country. He stressed that this shows the gravity of the issue. He further said that Judge Abdullah will not be allowed within the perimeters of the court.

In relation to President’s alleged statement that he will not be holding the Presidential Elections next year, President of the Elections Commission Fuwad Thaufeeg said that he has not received any information regarding this. He added that the commission is now laying the groundwork for the 2013 election.
