Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Abdul Majeed Abdul Baari has said that no reports of extremism have ever been reported to the Ministry in the past three years during his tenure as the Islamic Minister.

Speaking to Miadhu Daily, Dr. Majeed said that to have strict beliefs with regards to some subsidiary issues of the religion is not extremism.

“There exist some minority groups that have strict beliefs. But this is not extremism. We do not hereticate and take action against those people who differ in subsidiary issues of Islamic jurisprudence. We leave them to choose what they think is stronger in evidence,” he said.

Dr. Majeed said that it is impossible to fight extremism with harshness. He said that hatred will only breed hatred. He said that the Ministry always will work to rehabilitate those with strict beliefs by mutual consultation and counseling.

Despite Dr. Majeed’s denial of the existence of extremists, the government has been informing the international media and the foreign governments of the rise of extremist rhetoric in the Maldives.
