India Club, Maldives celebrates Pongal & Sankranti

Indian Club, the Association of expatriate Indian Community in Maldives, celebrated the Indian traditional festival ‘Pongal’ and ‘Sankranti’ at Dharubaaruge on January 27, 2011.
Pongal is celebrated as a harvest festival and also marks the traditional New Year in Tamil Nadu, India and by large number of Tamil population in other countries. The harvest festival is also celebrated a ‘Sankanti’ in many other Indian states.
The function in Maldives was celebrated with a lot of cheer with attendance by over 1200 people. The programme was attended by Dr. Mohamed Waheed, Vice President of Maldives as Chief Guest. Large number of dignitaries including Home Minister, Chairman of Election commission, Dr. Ibrahim Waheed, Election Commissioner and Indian High Commissioner, H.E. Mr. Dnyaneshwar M Mulay, also attended the program and conveyed their good wishes for the Pongal to the members of Indian community.
There was an interesting cultural program in different languages, by members of local Indian community, some Maldivian performers and artists specially invited from India for the occasion.
