Attorney General Abdullah Muizz has stated that the good image of the Maldives has been tainted because of the politicized rhetoric of radical clerics.

AG Muizz said that the recent unrest by fringe groups calling to implement strict measures and banning some vital services of the tourism industry is driving away the many foreign investors.

Muizz made this remark at yesterday’s hearing of the case where the government requested for the Supreme Court’s verdict on whether spas and the trade of alcohol and pork in tourist resorts being legal under the Maldives Constitution.

With the current clash of different ideologies, it is imperative that the Supreme Court settles the differences by ruling on the legality of alcohol and pork trade, said Muizz.

In yesterday’s hearing the seven Judges bench of the Supreme Court queried the government regarding the case. The state attorney said that the government believes that there is no law under the current constitution that prohibits the trade of alcohol and pork and spa services in the luxury tourist resorts.

State Attorney noted that the recent calls to the banning of alcohol and pork trade and also the spa services have resulted in many investors leaving the country.
