Do not be quiet, impeach Nasheed, Jabir tells Majlis

Saturday, January 28th, 2012

Newly elected Deputy Leader of Jumhoory Party, JP Abdulla Jabir has called on the People’s Majlis not to stay quiet and impeach President Nasheed soon. Jabir who joined JP on Friday after leaving ruling MDP said so speaking at the opposition protest last night.

Jabir said the President has violated the Constitution by arresting the Chief Judge of the Criminal Court , not obeying the order of the Supreme Court to release the judge and now declaring that the judges of the lower courts will not be paid their salaries and their verdicts will not be enforced.  When the President has come to such extent of violating Constitution, the Majlis must not stay quiet and proceed with taking the necessary actions to impeach the President to save the country and people from the brink of complete anarchy.

The businessman politician who was the Chairman of the Fund Raising Committee of MDP until he joined JP indicated this in his  statement at the protest. This was the first time Jabir participated in the protest. He received cheering applause from the protesters who have been voicing their condemnation of the President over the illegal arrest of the judge. They have continued to call for the resignation of the President, Chiefs of the Defence force and Police.

He expressed concern and anger on the President’s decision to stop paying the salaries of lower court judges and not to enforce the verdicts delivered by those judges. The news about the President’s decision was first leaked on Thursday in an audio recording of a speech he has given to the Police. This decision was also announced in the President’s radio address yesterday.

JP Leader Gasim Ibrahim who also joined the protest last night with Jabir warned the President that he cannot stop paying the salaries of judges and and decide the verdicts issued by the judges as non enforceable. Taking such action against the judges is against the Constitution. Gasim further said salaries of the judges were passed by the Majlis and spent from the State budget, not from the President’s pocket.

President Nasheed in his Friday radio address stated the judges of the lower courts were appointed against the conditions stipulated in the Constitution and therefore they are not constitutionally legal. He also said there are many qualified lawyers and others eligible for the posts.
