Sheikh Ilyas Hussein has said that the protest organized by the Civil Society Coalition will be held today to uphold the testimony of Islamic Faith and to eradicate Shirk (polytheism) from Maldives.
In a lecture held last night at the Artificial Beach area, Sheikh Ilyas said that the aim and motive of the protest is to protect Islamic unity in Maldives. He said that there is no political motives behind the protest.
“The protest is held to show to the world that Maldivians would not give freedom of religion,” he said.
“All should welcome the developments and progress brought to the country by the government. But if the government does anything that harms the Islamic unity in the Maldives, then the people are obliged to come out and voice their concerns. Protesting does not mean that the people are against the government,” he said.
Sheikh Ilyas said democracy is a system that opposes the Sharia of Islam. He called upon the government to leave of every system and every agreement that opposes the tenets of Islam.
“If any person goes against this protest which is going to be held for a higher cause, he is in fact going against the religion of Islam. May Allah guide such people and guide them to join the protest sincerely,” he said.
Sheikh Ilyas called all participants to seek protection from Allah and to supplicate to Him. He reminded the protestors to purify their intentions and to come out to the protest only to defend Islam.
Although last night’s lecture was organized in a short period of time, thousands gathered to listen to the charismatic Sheikh.
