The opposition Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP) has warned the government of court action if the fisheries subsidies are not given to the fishermen within a time period of maximum 21 days.

DQP said that the fishing is the lifeblood of the Maldivian nation and that the industry has been going downhill and that the families of the fishermen are now living in hunger and poverty. The party said that the subsidies given to the fishermen to purchase fuel are given with the aim to lift of these burdens from them and to help them out.

DQP noted that the government allocated 100 million Ruffiya for the fisheries subsidies in the 2011 state budget. However, DQP said that up until now the government failed to give the subsidies to the fishermen.

DQP threatened to go to the court of law if the promised fisheries subsidies are not given within a time period of 21 days.
