Top transplant surgeon drowns in Meedhupparu

UK and Europe are in mourning after top surgeon Ali Bakran drowned while snorkeling on holiday in Adaaran Meedhupparu Resort in Raa Atoll.
Dr. Bakran was found dead in Meedhupparu Island Resort in Raa Atoll. A resort staff made the discovery of the dead body in the lagoon lastweek.
British media reports that the 61-year-old who worked at Royal Liverpool Hospital for more than 20 years was a consultant transplant and vascular surgeon who touched the lives of ‘hundreds and thousands of people’.
Bakran was enjoying a two-week holiday in Maldives with his wife Diane and daughter Miriam when he was pulled from the water and pronounced dead.
The cause of Mr Bakran’s death on the morning of August 27 is not yet known and his grieving family must now await the results of a post-mortem, which will be carried out in the UK.
Dr. Bakran’s son, Adam was quoted by the UK media saying: We have no idea if he died before he drowned. My mum saw him snorkelling and then half an hour to 45 minutes later he was pulled from the water.
‘Probably the best way I can describe him is selfless. He cared about his patients almost as much as he cared about his family.’
It was reported that colleagues at the hospital where Mr Bakran worked broke down in tears when they learnt the tragic news.
Registrar Ajay Sharma, who was mentored by the surgeon, said he was renowned in the hospital for his commitment.
‘Hundreds and thousands of people had very high admiration for him,’ he said.
Holly Shaw, of Warrington, is just one of the many hundreds of grateful patients given a second lease of life by the talented surgeon.
She said: ‘He was dedicated and committed to each individual patient, but also to research and promoting organ donation.’
Shaw added: ‘He had a great sense of humour – he was professional at the same time, but you could have a bit of banter with him.’
