President Nasheed in 500 Most Influential Muslims

The Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Centre (RISSC) of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan has awarded President Mohamed Nasheed among the 500 most influential Muslims- 2010.

President Nasheed was lauded among the most influential Muslims under the category ‘Environment’ and was dubbed “one of the most environmentally conscious state leaders” in the Muslim world today.

“In the earliest stages of his political career, Nasheed was imprisoned for his criticism of his country’s government and became an Amnesty Prisoner of Conscience. Today, Nasheed has [promised] to make the Maldives carbon-neutral within a decade by moving the country’s energy reliance to wind and solar power only,” said the publication.

RISSC also listed State Minister of Islamic Affairs Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed was under the category ‘Administrative’.

RISSC’s publication also named influential figures of various sects within Islam such as Salam Al Awdah and Aaid Al-Qarni from Muslim Brotherhood, Ali Khamanei from the Iranian Shite Rafidites, Sheikh Abdul Aziz Aal Sheikh from the orthodox Sunni Salafists in its roll of honour.

500 most influential Muslims -2010 is the second of an annual series that provides a window into the movers and shakers of the Muslim world.
