Postponing the election will have no political benefit – Thasmeen

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Main opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) leader Ahmed Thasmeen Ali has said that postponing the local council election to maintain the councilors’ power will have no political benefit.

Thasmeen said that the public have become more aware of such political tactics.

Thasmeen accused the government for trying to postpone the local council elections for the advantage of the ruling party Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Furthermore, he alleged that the government is taking the issue of consolidating two islands to one island only to delay the council elections. Thasmeen added that this has been a major concern.

Elections Commission earlier said that a date for the elections could only be announced after the government publishes the list on the gazette.

DRP also participate in the negotiations over determining the inhabited islands.
