MDP and DRP dispute over revised pay structure
Article Tools
Ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and main opposition party Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) have disputed about the revised pay structure.
Speaking to Miadhu, DRP deputy leader, Gemanafushi MP, Ilham Ahmed said that there are lots of discriminations in the revised pay structure.
The pay structure revised by Majlis Finance Committee consists of 18 levels. Ilham said that the salaries set excluding the salaries of Judiciary and Councilors were all structured before and that it is not final.
Contrary to this MDP said that this was the final revision of the framework. Speaking to Miadhu, MDP Parliamentary Group Leader, Hulhuhenveiru MP Reeko Moosa Manik said that the salaries set are not the most appropriate salaries for the independent institutions.
He also alleged that there is much discrimination in the framework. Moosa noted that the salaries set for the Media Councilors is too low pay.
Maldives Media Council (MMC) members get only a basic salary of Rf2,500 – the lowest in the revised framework.
Judges of Male courts get Rf45,000, including a Rf30,000 basic salary and a Rf15,000 living allowance while island courts magistrates are paid Rf20,000, including a Rf16,000 basic salary and a Rf4,000 living allowance.
Vice Speaker of Parliament and Supreme Court Judges are at level four with a basic salary of Rf51,000 and a living allowance of Rf20 ,000.
While level five employees include MPs who get Rf42,500 as basic salary and Rf20,000 as living allowance, level six covers ministers, High Court Chief Judge, Prosecutor General, Commissioner General of Taxation, Governor of Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) and Auditor General who gets a Rf42,500 salary and a Rf15,000living allowance.
Moosa said that although the revised pay structure is not the best framework, but that it is the final revision to the framework.
