Last sitting of second session of Majlis cancelled

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Last sitting of the second session of People’s Majlis was cancelled due to disputes between the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party [MDP] MPs and opposition MPs heated up over the Judicature Bill.

MDP Parliamentary group however alleged that the Majlis session was cancelled as was planned by the opposition.

In the Majlis sitting Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party [DRP] proposed amendments and voted to abolish the article on re-conducting trials carried out during the former regime.

Although the Majlis session started calmly, the amendment of DRP to the Judicature Bill triggered uproar in the Majlis.

MDP argued that the amendment to prevent the courts from conducting trials related to activities of the former government was unacceptable. However, all the amendments of the opposition were passed.

A statement issued by the parliament this morning said that the parliament had ceased for recess and would resume in October.

Speaker Abdulla Shahid cancelled the sitting at 1.50am.
