Kulhudhufushi Dhekunu constituency member Mohamed Nasheed has said that the Judiciary of the Maldives will only be complete after the passing of the Bill on Judicature.
In a post in his personal blog, Nasheed said that the works of the days of Ramadan have been spent on the Bill on Judicature. He also stated that Maldives Judiciary will be fully working only after passing and ratifying the bill.
Nasheed also noted that the Bill on Judicature is more technical and judicial than the other political bills. He said that the courts, Prosecutor General, Judges and Lawyers have been consulted in amending the bill.
On Tuesday the last sitting of the second session of People’s Majlis was cancelled due to disputes between the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party [MDP] MPs and opposition MPs heated up over the Judicature Bill.
In the Majlis sitting Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party [DRP] proposed amendments and voted to abolish the article on re-conducting trials carried out during the former regime.
Although the Majlis session started calmly, the amendment of DRP to the Judicature Bill triggered uproar in the Majlis.
MDP argued that the amendment to prevent the courts from conducting trials related to activities of the former government was unacceptable. However, all the amendments of the opposition were passed.
