UNESCO’s Director-General Irina Bokova will, in New York, give a keynote address at an international conference, on the theme: ‘Literacy: an essential foundation for development’ at the United Nations.
According to Ms. Bokova, in her message for the day, ‘Investing in women’s literacy carries very high returns: it improves livelihoods, leads to better child an d maternal health and favours girls’ access to education. In short newly literate women have a positive ripple effect on all development indicators.
