Elections Commission has expressed concern for the claims of Opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party’s (DRP) Baa atoll Thulhaadhoo Wing President Mohamed Asrar that the commission had a hand in including him in the register of the ruling party Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) without his knowledge.

Elections Commissioner Fuad Thaufeeq denied charges made against the commission by Asrar. He stressed that the responsibility should be taken by the respected parties which the membership forms are sent from.

Fuad also noted that the issue of forging membership from one party to another is a grave concern of the commission. He also added that the commission introduced the applicant to include a fingerprint on the application form to overcome the problem.

Furthermore, Fuad noted that the commission seeks assistance from Maldives Police Service in investigating such cases of forgery.

Opposition DRP Baa atoll Thulhaadhoo Wing President Mohamed Asrar Friday filed a case with police claiming that he was included in ruling Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) register without his knowledge.

Asrar’s Lawyer Mohamed Waheed Ibrahim alleged that this was done to stop the candidates from DRP to run in the Local Council Elections.
