Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

A case of corruption at the Maldives Customs investigated by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) have been completed and submitted to the Prosecutor General (PG), according to reports.

According to a media release of ACC, it reports that the evidence allegedly shows the involvement of the former Minister of State Principal Collector of Customs, Ibrahim Shafiu (Kuvaa) and Direcor of Maldives Customs Service, Fatih Ali. It is alleged they abused their position in defrauding the import documents of used Mercedes Benz imported by Cartunes.

ACC said that they fixed the prices of the imported items which basically meant heavy losses for the customs revenue.

Ibrahim Shafiu worked earlier as the Chief Spokesperson for the main opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP).

According to sources, Shafiu left the Maldives to Canada soon after the fall of the regime of President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. He was also appointed as member of the constitutional assembly by Gayyoom to negotiate on his behalf.
