Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Staff of Kurumba Maldives who were arrested during the three day strike have resigned under compulsion of the management, claimed the staff.

19 of the staff were arrested for instigating violence in the strike organized by about 200 staff complaining of poor staff facilities, low wages, unfair distribution of service charges and discrimination between local and foreign staff.

Two of the staff told Miadhu that they signed an agreement with Universal and were given asked to resign.

They alleged that the company assured that they will not seek legal action against them.

“Our salary and allowances for last month should be given,” the staff added.

Universal alleged that the organizers of the strike staged a vociferous demonstration in the vicinity of the guests at the resort, thereby detrimentally affecting tourist arrivals, and causing significance loss to the Maldivian economy as a whole.

Chairman of Universal Enterprises Koli Muhammad Umar Manik said that Kurumba Maldives has to incur more than 2 million in loss due to the strike and consequent evacuation of the in house guests and cancellation of bookings.
