Thursday, August 26th, 2010

The five stare resort Kurumaba Maldives has resumed its operation after the resort was shut down following the strike by its employees. Police arrested 19 of the strikers.

The management of the resort now agrees that they understand the some of the issues of the employees and will look into it. However, the resort claims that they have lost millions in lost business.

For three days over 150 employees of Kurumba Maldives have been on strike for the last three days complaining of management inaction over poor staff accommodation, food, unfair distribution of service charges and staff discrimination.

Since the beginning of the protests 30% of the tourists left Kurumba Maldives and eventually all of them departed back to their home country and to some other resorts in Maldives at 12:30 yesterday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) said that the temporary closure of the Kurumba Maldives resort following three days of strike action by staff has had a roll-on impact on local tour operators and travel agents.
