Dhuvafaru Office launches Pakistan Fund Relief

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

The catastrophic floods in Pakistan have sent shock waves through the islanders of Raa Atoll Dhuvaafaru, who have set up a donation box with the aim of collecting 20 thousand US dollars.

Dhuvafaru Office informed that a donation box was set up in the Atoll School. Furthermore, they said that donations will be welcome till the last of Ramadaan.

Also it is reported that Dhuvafaru Pakistan Fund Relief will only accept US dollars. Additonally the Island Office said that the salary for a day from the monthly wages of the government staff and the fishermen of the island will be donated to the fund.

Dhuvafaru Office noted that now a committee of 15 members from the islanders has been established to manage the fund.

In addition, it is reported that a Pakistani Citizen works as a teacher at the Atoll School located in the island.

Various donation boxes have been established to help the relief effort nationwide.

Meanwhile, the United Nations has dubbed Pakistan’s monsoon floods the largest humanitarian crisis affecting an estimated 20 million people. That’s bigger than the combined effects of Katrina, the 2005 Indian Ocean tsunami and Kashmir earthquake, 2007 Cyclone Nargis, and this year’s Haitian earthquake.

Roughly 8 million people need humanitarian aid, according to the U.N.

It is perhaps fortuitous then that this disaster coincides with the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, when Muslims give the most in charity to fulfill one of the five pillars of their faith.
