Consolidating smaller populated islands with bigger islands

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Cabinet members have said that consolidating smaller populations with bigger islands would improve delivery of services and decentralised administration.

The Cabinet noted this in a cabinet meeting held yesterday at the President’s Office to discuss measures required for implementing the Decentralisation Act and the Local Council Election Act.

The Cabinet, in particular, discussed guidelines and policies in determining inhabited islands in accordance with the Decentralisation Act.

The Cabinet appointed a three-member committee to study the issue further and make recommendations to the Cabinet.

The committee includes Minister of Housing and Environment Mohamed Aslam, Minister of State for Home Affairs Ahmed Shafeeg and Minister of State for Fisheries and Agriculture Dr Hussain Rasheed Hassan.

The government will make a final decision on inhabited islands after consultations with political parties and relevant island populations.
