Press Secretary, Mohamed Zuhair has said that Abdulla Yaameen, MP for Mulaku and leader of opposition Peoples Alliance is released, because of relaxed tension in Male. Previously, Abdulla Yaameen was under MNDF’s “security” for his “protection” at Presidential Retreat Aarah, as a result of political tension which led to street violence and demonstrations, government has maintained.
Speaking to Miadhu Daily, Zuhair also noted that Yaameen was not in a detention at the presidential retreat and that government was obliged to keep him there, as a result of the political tension in Male’.
Zuhair also maintained that Yaameen was released not because of the international pressure.
“It is a must upon the government to do things it feel right for the collective benefit of the society, at times like this” Zuhair said.
“When people express their opinions through freedom of assembly, and when others throw stones at them peace will certainly be short-lived. It is a government’s duty to prevent such violence” Zuhair also added.
On 15 July, gang members attacked an MDP rally, when it passed by Abdulla Yaameen’s residence. Gang members set fire on MDP flags and placards used by the demonstrators. However, MDP supporters peacefully continued the rest of their march to the south-east corner of Male.
Later that night clashes erupted across the capital Male between supporters of the ruling MDP and opposition outside DRP offices near Artificial Beach where MDP was holding a rally which was attended by President Mohamed Nasheed.
MDP supporters called off the rally and protested outside the home of Mulaku MP Abdulla Yamin. The protest turned into violence between the two groups and also police, with the protestors throwing rocks and empty bottles at one another. Just before an hour into the demonstrations police dispersed the crowd using tear gas.
Zuhair also reiterated government’s readiness to negotiate with necessary stakeholders.
