Yaameen has to be under security to avoid repetition of history – President

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

Abdulla Yaameen, MP for Mulaku and leader of PA, has to be under the safety and security of Maldives National Defense Force, to avoid a repetition of history, President Mohamed Nasheed has said.

In a press conference held today, President was referring to the lynching of Mohamed Amin Didi, first president of the first Republic of the country. Mohamed Amin Didi was sent to Dhoonidhoo Island, however his supporters attempted to bring him back to Male, sparking large-scale violence in the capital island leading to the assassination of President Amin by a mob, and subsequent collapse of the first republic.

President Nasheed noted that Yaameen is being held in Aarah for his own safety and that history shows us that at a time like this, Abdulla Yaameen maybe vulnerable to attacks.

President Nasheed said that he would not let Amin Didi’s fate falls upon Yaameen or any other Maldivian politician, under his leadership. President Nasheed also reminded that he is the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces as well, and that MNDF would act under his orders.

President Nasheed also said that he does not believe that Yaameen’s detention for his own safety and security is a reason for parliament’s deadlock.

President Nasheed also said that Yaameen’s detention is a comfortable one, in the same leisure as even President Nasheed would have been in Aarah, presidential retreat. President Nasheed also said that Yaameen can meet with his lawyers, wife and can contact anyone he wants to via telephone.

Almost all the questions posed to Press Secretary, Mohamed Zuhair was on the detention of Abdulla Yaameen. Zuhair noted that Abdulla Yaameen is one individual but as a government, it has to think about the rights of others as well. “We can foresee lot of problems for Yaameen if he is brought to Male” Zuhair said.
