We are the best friends of Maldives – High Commissioner Mulay

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

High Commissioner of India in the Maldives has said that Indians see Maldivians as their “best friends” in the inauguration of “New Vision for Economic Development Between Maldives and India”.

High Commissioner Mulay also noted that no country could afford isolationism in the twenty-first century. He also noted that India’s decision to privatize and open up has proven to be successful. He also noted that privatization and foreign investments are mutually beneficial for Indian government and investors as well.

“However, opposition parties maintained back then that this would not work although now they are supporting privatization as they now see the result of privatization” noted High Commissioner.

He also called on the Maldivian investors to invest in India as well.

“Maldives has always been a country with budgetary constraints but the country could not be said poor because it has the highest GDP per capita in the region” noted the High Commissioner.

High Commissioner also said that he believe that providing handouts to government is not successful or sustainable as far as aid mobilization is concerned. The best alternative would be to provide assistance in increasing business in the country, so that it will create jobs and sustainable source of income to government as tax.

He also noted that urgency of establishing a reliable shipping service between India and Maldives.

“There is no better time to start something good. Some people has been questioning if this is the best time to conduct India Maldives Friendship Festival because of the ongoing political crisis in the Maldives. But to my mind, it is good to further strengthen the bond between the peoples of two countries. So I do not believe that there would be any better time to start the festival” he noted.
