United States mediates with Maldives government and the opposition

United States has mediated between the Government of Maldives and the opposition parties to break the political deadlock, Hassan Afeef, President’s Political Advisor has confirmed.

The first meeting aiming to break the political impasse was held in Muleeaage, President’s Residence, was attended by President Nasheed, Speaker Abdulla Shahid and the Leader of DRP, Ahmed Thasmeen Ali.

Afeef also said that the aim of the meeting was for the government to do all it can in order to solve the political dilemma in the country.

Press Secretary, Mohamed Zuhair also added that government also hoped to get the confirmation for the new cabinet in the parliament dominated by the opposition and to solve the opposition parties’ issue of passing bills to jeopardize the government.

In the same press conference, Ibrahim Rasheed, Under-Secretary at the Presidents Office also said that government is prepared to negotiate with all politicians in the country who are free from corruption.

MDP and the government have also repeated charges of corruption against Ahmed Thasmeen Ali, opposition leader. When questioned on why government is negotiating with the Ahmed Thasmeen Ali and its previous allegations, Mohamed Zuhair said that he was referring to those opposition leaders who were charged with corruption.

Afeef also added that “Thasmeen has never been accused of corruption, but it was his family”.

Press Secretary also confirmed that government is in dialogue with four main opposition parties, DRP, PA, DQP and JP. Zuhair also added that given the present situation, the fact that meeting took place is a good sign.

Jumhooree Party has confirmed that it has participated in the government led dialogue, but its spokesman Moosa Rameez said that the meeting has failed to produce any concrete results.

Miadhu Daily also understands that the negotiations were attended by President Mohamed Nasheed, US Ambassador Butenis, Dr. Hassan Saeed from DQP, Moosa Rameez from JP, Ahmed Nazim from PA and Ahmed Thasmeen Ali from DRP.
