A tropical south west monsoon gust and not a tropical typhoon, is responsible for several marine incidents occurred yesterday afternoon in the central Maldives, Met Office has said. However, Met Office also noted that during the gust, wind speeds reached to a record 62 miles per hour.
Among many incidents reported at sea were reports of a sinking fishing vessel named “Rasmathi” off the east of Hulhule.
MNDF’s coastguard responded to reports, MNDF has said. The boat contained 11 crewmen, who were mostly from Shaviyani atoll Foakaidhoo and was sunk near Dhonveli Beach Resort.
Saleem said MNDF became aware of the boat’s location after tracking the phone’s location via Dhiraagu. MNDF has sent its vessels near Hulhule to Hinmafushi area.
The crewmen were rescued near Kaaf Atoll Hinmafushi around four hours after the incident.
Coast Guard described the marine incidents as “the day that it received the highest number of reports lately.”
In another incident, a cargo carrier called “Raina” wrecked on Hulhule reef. Other reports include some ferries slipping off while being anchored at the harbour, roofs flung and trees uprooted in the capital Male.
Reports of trees falling into residence blocks and minor fires and other miscellaneous incidents were also reported yesterday, MNDF fire and rescue services said.
A Met Office official said effects of the south-west monsoon gust would be experienced at southern areas of the Maldives within the next 24 hours. The centre also appeals the public not to travel by sea.
“[Seas] will not be rough mostly, but it will be rough during the gust. So we forecast that it will be very rough sometimes within the next 24 hours,” the official said. “Rain showers will be experienced. But the danger is due to the strong winds. So we appeal everyone not to travel by sea, as the seas will be very rough” the Official also warned.
