President Nasheed inaugurates new National Museum

President Mohamed Nasheed has today inaugurated the new National Museum. The inauguration ceremony was held this morning as part of the Independence Day celebrations.
Speaking at the function, the President noted that the Maldives has a long history and that the Maldives has a written history of more than 1,000 years. He added the Maldives has a recorded history that is rich and colourful.
In his speech, the President said the lessons from history teach us to respect and uphold human rights. He said that Maldivians, today, will not tolerate any form of abuse or torture.
The new museum complex was built with the assistance of the Chinese government as part of a UNESCO project.
First Lady Madam Laila Ali, Vice President Dr Mohamed Waheed and his wife Madam Ilham Hussain also attended the function.
