Parliament should not “investigate” the cases looked into by the judiciary – Speaker
Article Tools
Speaker Abdulla Shahid has said that parliament should not attempt to investigate the cases which are being looked into by the judiciary.
During yesterday’s parliament sitting, Speaker noted that some MPs have said that it is the duty of the speaker to investigate the cases which implicates MPs. “However, I believe that Parliament is a place where we deal with political issues. I believe that we should not attempt to interfere into the criminal cases which are being looked into by the judiciary and that should be avoided at any cost” Speaker said.
“Parliament should not be judgmental on the fact that MPs can be arrested by the relevant authorities by the due process of law. And I believe that we should not comment on the deliberations by the judiciary against some of the MPs either” veteran parliamentarian and former diplomat noted.
The only progress in the parliament yesterday was the adoption of the daily records and appointment of Hassan Latheef, MP for Hithadhoo Dhekunu, to the Parliamentary Committee on National Security.
Speaker also noted that Hassan Latheef is being appointed to the Committee because DRP has decided to appoint Latheef, instead of Mohamed Hussain, MP for Kanditheemu.
Session then went into disarray and deadlock, until Speaker decided to close the session as a result.
