Opposition alliance is ready to negotiate with the government to solve the political crisis in the country and to bring economic stability, Qasim Ibrahim, leader of Jumhoory Party and MP for Maamingili has said.
In a press conference by the opposition alliance, both Ahmed Thasmeen Ali, leader of DRP and MP for Kendhoo and Qasim also said that the only condition would be to conduct the negotiations in the presence of four leaders of the opposition coalition. Qasim also said that the negotiations and its conclusions shall be within the constitutional framework of the country.
“We believe that the judiciary and the independent institutions shall be independent and as stated in the constitution” noted both MPs.
Qasim also highlighted the travel advisory issued by the UK government and stated that if the situation in the Maldives continues unabated more countries would take such steps creating economic challenges to the country and economic hardship for the people as a result.
Qasim also added that opposition coalition would not wish to create any chaos in the country, but rather is working for the betterment of the nation.
“President Nasheed is a wise leader. He has a mandate to maintain peace and security in the country. He should not forget how previous government reacted when the he did the same thing while he was the opposition leader” Qasim said.
Qasim called on the government not to take their political work personally.
Qasim also said that he do not know how the EU, US or UN would react if the constitutional rule in the country is threatened. He also emphasized the importance of solving the crisis before it gets worse.
“President Nasheed became the leader through elections and within the law. He should remain so as President” Qasim concluded.
Within two hours after UK’s travel advisory, a situation brief on the Maldives was issued in a website which aims to provide information for investors.
