I do not believe individuals can establish courts – AG

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Attorney-General Husnu-al-Suoodh has said that he does not believe that courts could be set up and conducted by individuals.

Many believe that AG’s comments were on “Peoples Court” led by MDP Parliamentary Group Leader, Moosa Maniku.

Speaking to Television Maldives, Husnu-al-Suoodh noted that as per the constitution judicial power is vested in the Maldives judiciary, and establishing a court by an individual even as a joke is unacceptable.

However, Husnu-al-Suoodh said that we should also question ourselves as to why things in our society have gone to a level to which individuals are setting up their very own courts and expressed concern on the situation.

He also noted that in Islamic Sharia, judicial powers are a vital responsibility and for a very good reason. He also noted that the very concept of state and the government is also to deliver justice.

Maldives Democratic Party has established “Peoples Court” and in return Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) has established “Peoples Supreme Court” and is conducting “hearings”.

Many also criticized AG’s opinion for being bit late, only when DRP established its own Court and not when MDP created its Court.

  1. People had been Waiting for justice, for decades.whether it is a civil case or a criminal case. People say, courts here are like corner boutiques and cases are being desplayed with a price tag. You pay for it and it’s yours! This was a concern of every individual then. But today, when the whole nation is denied justice, the people, collectively came up with their own court “The People’s Court” meaning to say that they are ready to take back their power of justice which they deligated to the Judiciary through a Constitiution which also defines as ” POWER BEGIN FROM THE PEOPLE”
