It is important to amend constitution to bring political stability to Maldives – President
President Nasheed has said that he is ready to change Maldives political system into a parliamentary system and to seek immediate re-election, in a press conference held yesterday.
President Nasheed also said that parliament’s some of the laws are making it difficult for the executive to play its role as per the constitution. President Nasheed also said that the root of the current political crisis leads to constitution and the type of political system in the Maldives.
“We have to work on to rectify these challenges in governance. One option would be to agree that Maldives should be a parliamentary democracy so that we will have a new parliamentary election and presidential election as well” President Nasheed noted.
President Nasheed also said that it would be difficult for any government to rule the country with the present constitution. He also said that if we can’t agree for a parliamentary system, we should seek a complete presidential system instead and amend the constitution as such.
President Nasheed also highlighted that amending constitution might not be a process which could begun immediately, but if all parties agree there is no reason for delay. President also said that he hopes an agreement could be reached through negotiation and dialogue.
