Government Urges Public to Co-operate with Police; Respect Law and Order

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

The government has urged the public to remain calm and extend their full co-operation with the Maldives Police Service and the Maldives National Defense Force.

The appeal follows public unrest last week, after individuals connected to a street gang threw bricks and other projectiles at members of the public who were attending a rally in Male’ against corruption.

“I understand the public outcry over the cash-for-votes scandal in the People’s Majlis. I also share people’s frustrations, when a handful of powerful MPs behave with apparent impunity,” said Press Secretary Mohamed Zuhair.

“Nevertheless, it is the duty of every citizen to remain calm and respect the rule of law at all times. I also appeal to members of the public to support and co-operate with the law enforcement agencies, who, under difficult circumstances, have behaved competently and professionally throughout,” added Zuhair.

The Press Secretary added that the government will not tolerate gangsterism and thuggery and expressed full confidence in the Police in bringing to justice those responsible for last week’s attacks.
