Article Tools
President Mohamed Nasheed has said that if opposition DRP is ready to bring necessary amendments to the Constitution, ruling MDP is ready to hold presidential and parliamentary elections, speaking at an MDP rally held on 28 July 2010.
Speaking further President Nasheed noted that there are two amendments which MDP would like to bring to Constitution. Firstly, to amend the Constitution as to establish a complete presidential system, and secondly that this amendment would allow the Constitution to amend the appointment of cabinet as is done in presidential systems, President said.
President Nasheed also noted that if DRP agrees with the idea a presidential election could be held on 11 July 2011.
President Nasheed also referred that he has supported the idea of a midterm election in Addoo while campaigning, and noted that he is still prepared for such an election. He also urged MDP supporters to be ready for a presidential election, in case there might be one.
“There is no reason why I should not compete in an election. Because in my whole life, winning an election is something I am very familiar with” President Nasheed noted. President Nasheed also vowed to get a clear majority if he goes for a re-election.
“I will go for a midterm election with confidence and unfortunately opening of new housing units and new development projects would reach fruitation in the same period as the election. I think its tough luck for the opposition and there is no foul-play there” President noted.
Speaking further President Nasheed also noted that entire constitution reflects more parliamentary system of governance although articles on Executive is derived from presidential systems. Hence the product is a “messy system”, not a parliamentary and not a presidential system either, President noted.
President Nasheed also noted that he has two conditions for a re-election, first one being the amendment of the constitution and the second being an approval by the parliament to dissolve itself so that new elections for parliament could also be held. He also noted that the presidential elections and parliamentary elections should be held together.
President Nasheed also welcomed the talks between MDP and DRP alliance and said he is optimistic of the results.
President Nasheed also noted that there are sane and logical politicians in all parties and that their say has to increase at this juncture. He also noted that those politicians should somehow take control from those politicians who chose authoritarian style and violence.
