Detention of MPs a blow to freedom of expression and freedom of association – Nasheed

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Mohamed Nasheed, former Information Minister and MP for Kulhudhuffushi Dhekunu, has said that the detention of Qasim Ibrahim and Abdulla Yaameen is a blow to freedom of expression and freedom of association in the Maldives. He also questioned the government on the charges which it is pursuing against both MPs.

He also noted that according to some sources the charges are treason, while others indicates bribery and also another group says that it is corruption. He also noted that no matter the charges the longest time frame they could be detained is 24 hours.

He also noted that detention can only be extended with a court order. However he noted that for that extension, government will has to provide the details of the charges against them.

Nasheed also added that the law which government has based its charges is unconstitutional and said that a law which would nullify the bill was presented to parliament on September 2008. He also added that despite the deadline parliament has failed to nullify them.

  1. Nasheed… its not nice to open your mouth and talk about justice, freedom etc.

You guys are simply interested in justice and Rule of law when a opposition member or an MP is affected,. What have you done for the people??? nothing.

So better shut up and let our president rule the country autocratically. That is what is best for us now.. No other choice.
