Criminal Court has ordered to transfer MP for Mulaku, Abdulla Yaameen and MP for Maamigili, Qasim Ibrahim, who were accused of bribery to house arrest.
Court also ordered that they would be able to attend the parliament sessions as well as the Committee meetings of the parliament, in the hearing held last night at 2330 hrs.
The hearing was held on the case lodged by both MPs that they have been detained unconstitutionally and against the immunities and privileges of MPs.
During the hearing Police said that two MPs were detained against conspiring to oust democratically elected government through bribing parliamentarians. However both MPs denied the charges.
Judge also noted that their detention should continue in house arrest for the safety of the society, although they can attend the parliamentary sessions and committee meetings.
Speaking to media for the first time after the detention, Qasim Ibrahim told Miadhu Daily outside the courthouse that the charges against him are fabricated. “This is something that is fabricated against me. I haven’t done anything like this” said the MP and the prominent businessmen who have gone through the same saga during the previous regime as well.
He also denied that the cabinet resigned because of lack of cooperation from the parliament.
Judge also noted that constitutional and legal rights of the both MPs were neglected in the detaining process.
Many has accused the government that it has purposely detained both MPs. Ahmed Thasmeen Ali, leader of the opposition said that the government is staging a “political show”.
