PA condemns the arrest of opposition MPs

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Peoples Alliance, headed by former President Gayoom’s half brother, Abdulla Yaameen, has condemned the arrest of opposition MPs Abdulla Yaameen and Qasim Ibrahim.

In a press released issued after the resignation of Maldives cabinet over lack of cooperation from the parliament and arrest of the two prominent MPs, PA also noted that President Nasheed has warned that he would take action against parliamentarians who seem to obstruct the mandate of the government to discharge its functions. “He also noted that he would be deploying the police and the military in this regard” the press release noted.

PA also noted that the charges against the MPs and if the police has received the necessary warrants to arrest both MPs are unclear at this stage, but seems to connect the arrest with an amendment to Public Finance Act which both MPs has supported in the parliament day before yesterday.

PA also called on the government to release the parliamentarians and called on the Inter-Parliamentary Union to investigate the matter.
